Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, chopped onion, and bell pepper (if using). Cook, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, smoked paprika, and chili powder. Mix well to combine.
  • Let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally. If the sauce gets too thick, add a bit of water to reach your desired consistency.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.

2. Prepare the Texas Toast:

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Place the Texas toast slices on a baking sheet. Brush both sides of each slice with the melted butter and sprinkle lightly with garlic powder (if using).
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 5-6 minutes or until golden and crispy. If you want to add cheese, sprinkle the shredded cheese on top during the last 2 minutes of baking, just long enough for it to melt.

3. Assemble the Texas Toast Sloppy Joes:

  • Once the Texas toast is crispy and golden, remove it from the oven.
  • Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture onto each slice of Texas toast.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!
