In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, chopped onion, and bell pepper (if using). Cook, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, smoked paprika, and chili powder. Mix well to combine.
Let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally. If the sauce gets too thick, add a bit of water to reach your desired consistency.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
2. Prepare the Texas Toast:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Place the Texas toast slices on a baking sheet. Brush both sides of each slice with the melted butter and sprinkle lightly with garlic powder (if using).
Bake in the preheated oven for about 5-6 minutes or until golden and crispy. If you want to add cheese, sprinkle the shredded cheese on top during the last 2 minutes of baking, just long enough for it to melt.
3. Assemble the Texas Toast Sloppy Joes:
Once the Texas toast is crispy and golden, remove it from the oven.
Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture onto each slice of Texas toast.
