Famous Lasagna

Instructions:

1. Cook the Lasagna Noodles:

  • If using regular lasagna noodles, cook them according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside on a baking sheet or parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • If using no-boil noodles, skip this step.

2. Prepare the Meat Sauce:

  • In a large skillet or saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through (about 5-7 minutes). Drain any excess fat.
  • Add the chopped onion and garlic to the pan and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Stir in the marinara sauce, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, sugar, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring to a simmer and let it cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce is too thick, add a little water or wine to reach your desired consistency.

3. Prepare the Ricotta Cheese Mixture:

  • In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, 1 cup of shredded mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, fresh parsley, and salt. Mix well until smooth and creamy.

4. Assemble the Lasagna:

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a 9×13-inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the dish to prevent sticking.
  • Place a layer of cooked lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping them.
  • Spread a generous layer of ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles, then top with a layer of meat sauce.
  • Sprinkle some mozzarella cheese on top of the meat sauce.
  • Repeat the layers: noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella. End with a layer of noodles topped with the remaining meat sauce and a final layer of mozzarella cheese.

5. Bake the Lasagna:

  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent the cheese from burning) and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  • Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing to allow the layers to set.

6. Serve:

  • Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
  • Slice the lasagna and serve with a side of garlic bread or a simple salad for a complete meal.
