Instructions:
For the Cake:
- Preheat the oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8-inch (20cm) round or square cake pan.
- Mix the dry ingredients:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add wet ingredients:
- Stir in the milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and egg. Mix until smooth and well combined.
- Incorporate boiling water:
- Gradually add the boiling water to the batter, mixing gently. The batter will be thin—this is normal.
- Bake:
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool:
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
For the Fudge Frosting:
- Melt the butter:
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
- Add cocoa powder:
- Stir in the cocoa powder until smooth.
- Mix in powdered sugar and milk:
- Gradually add the powdered sugar and milk, alternating and stirring constantly, until the frosting reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.
- Flavor with vanilla:
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
